Launching the Rome Summer Law Institute 2027: Law and Global Challenges in a Changing World
I am delighted to announce the official launch of the Rome Summer Law Institute, an exciting new international academic initiative that will take place in Rome, Italy, from May 16 to June 11, 2027, hosted at the University of Washington Rome Center and the Italian Institute of German Studies.
This marks the beginning of a new chapter built upon nearly two decades of international educational experience. The Rome program follows the remarkable success of the Summer Law Institute in Beijing, which was organized over fifteen editions (2005–2019) and paused mainly due to COVID-19 Pandemic and brought together students, academics, professionals, government officials, and institutional partners from across the globe.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The Beijing Summer Law Institute became an internationally recognized platform for interdisciplinary legal education, comparative research, professional networking, mentoring, internships, institutional cooperation, and cultural exchange. Over the years it developed a vibrant global alumni community and collaborations with universities, public institutions, international organizations, and practitioners.
The Rome Summer Law Institute continues that tradition while embracing a new mission and identity.
The new program will continue to explore the major legal and policy challenges shaping our increasingly interconnected and multipolar world.
An Interdisciplinary Global Program
The Institute brings together comparative perspectives on:
- climate change and energy transition;
- environmental governance;
- food systems and sustainable development;
- artificial intelligence and emerging technologies;
- intellectual property and innovation;
- digital governance and cybersecurity;
- international trade and investment;
- geopolitics and global governance;
- supply chains and economic security;
- China, Europe, the United States and the Indo-Pacific;
- law and global challenges in the twenty-first century.
Participants may choose to attend one, two, three, or all four weeks, making the program flexible for students, professionals, academics, and policymakers.
The educational experience extends beyond traditional classroom teaching through executive workshops, institutional visits, policy dialogues, networking events, international conferences, and cultural activities.

Although a dedicated new website for the Rome Summer Law Institute will be launched shortly, we have decided to open applications immediately to allow prospective participants and partner institutions to begin planning for the 2027 edition.
