Independence Day and the Pursuit of a More Perfect Union
Happy Fourth of July!
As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I find myself reflecting on the enduring constitutional ideals that have shaped the American republic.
In October 2019, during a visit to the United States Capitol with my students, I viewed those institutions through the eyes of a scholar. What impressed me most was that the Capitol is more than a seat of government. It stands as a reminder that the strength of a constitutional democracy lies not in the claim of perfection, but in the enduring commitment of each generation to liberty, the rule of law, democratic self-government, and the continual pursuit of a more perfect Union.
The American constitutional project has never been one of achieving a perfect nation, but of continually striving, in the words of the Constitution, “to form a more perfect Union.” Those ideals are neither static nor fully realized. They require constant reflection, civic engagement, and a shared commitment across generations. Their enduring vitality depends on our willingness to pursue justice, strengthen our institutions, and renew our common purpose.
Wishing everyone a meaningful and joyful Fourth of July, a wonderful time with family and friends, and a safe Independence Day.
